In today’s world, staying connected isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity. From applying for jobs to accessing telehealth services and staying in touch with loved ones, phone and internet service are essential. Thankfully, the Lifeline Program exists to make these services more affordable for low-income households.

What Is the Lifeline Program?
The Lifeline Program is a federal benefit program administered by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) that provides a monthly discount on phone or internet service. This helps ensure that eligible Americans—especially seniors, veterans, and low-income families—can stay connected to vital resources and opportunities.
How Much Is the Lifeline Discount?
- Up to $9.25/month for phone or internet service
- Up to $34.25/month for those living on Tribal lands
This discount can be applied to either a landline, wireless phone, or broadband internet, whichever is most beneficial to the household.
Who Is Eligible for Lifeline?
You may qualify for Lifeline if your household income is at or below 135% of the federal poverty guidelines OR if you participate in one of the following programs:
- SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program)
- Medicaid
- SSI (Supplemental Security Income)
- Federal Public Housing Assistance (HUD)
- Veterans Pension or Survivors Benefit Programs
- Tribal-specific programs (such as Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance)

Why Lifeline Matters
In a digital-first society, no one should be left behind due to cost barriers. The Lifeline Program helps bridge the digital divide and allows everyone the opportunity to connect, learn, and thrive.
Alternatives to Lifeline from Internet Providers
If your internet provider doesn’t participate in the federal Lifeline Program, don’t give up. Some companies offer their own low-cost connectivity options.
For example, Sparklight (formerly Cable One) doesn’t participate in Lifeline but offers a similar program called Lift Internet, which provides affordable internet to eligible customers.
Other providers may have unique discount plans for low-income families, seniors, or students. It’s always worth contacting your internet company directly to ask if they offer any alternative programs that can help you save on your monthly bill.
