Ted & Kim traveling to Cabo taking advantage of AARP benefits

AARP Benefits Aren’t Just For Old People

disclosure

I just turned 50 which means I’m now being bombarded with advertisements for old people. It feels kind of gloomy to think of nursing home insurance, much less burial plots. But the mailer for AARP benefits caught my eye.

First, let’s get this straight: AARP, or the American Association of Retired Persons, just isn’t for senior citizens. Though it is often thought of as a retirement-focused organization, AARP actually provides a number of benefits for people of all ages.

The advertisement offered a 2-year membership plus a free insulated trunk organizer for only $20. I already have a FoundersCard membership, plus memberships to AAA and Costco, do I really need another membership?

Well, considering that the insulated trunk organizer has “three large sections with two sturdy handles for easy carrying, an insulated lining to keeps groceries cooler longer, plus it expands to fit groceries, travel accessories, sports gear, and more and then folds away compactly when not in use” well that has to be worth more than the $20 cost of membership, right? So, I signed up. AARP allows a free second membership for a spouse or household member, so I signed up Ted as well. Photo above is Ted and me getting ready to parasail in Cabo – please tell me I don’t look fifty?!

Is AARP worth it for those under 50?

CNBC actually recommends people should join AARP in their 20s due to the discounts available on entertainment, restaurants, travel and more. I asked my posse

Yes, says Danielle Faust, Podcast Host, Hypnotherapist & Life Coach

From a 40 year old “millennial” has had AARP for 5 years: I LOVE my AARP membership. It’s absolutely awesome and has saved me thousands of dollars on hotels over the years. I use it for other travel discounts as well. I’ll never give it up! I even read the monthly magazine and it has me thinking about and planning for my future in ways I wouldn’t have thought of.

No, says Jared Weitz, CEO/Founder of United Capital Inc.

I am 40 and have an AARP membership. I heard that with an AARP membership, you could get generous discounts, like at hotels or on flights. However, I’ve noticed that there is usually a markup when using your AARP membership to book, often making it more expensive to use your membership than to book normally. As such, even though the membership is cheap, I likely won’t renew it in the future.
