Long time readers will know that I started my liquidation business by buying Target liquidation pallets. Since then, I’ve expanded and brought pallets and truckloads from several of other big box stores including Macy’s liquidation and Nordstrom Rack liquidation (and even Bed Bath & Beyond liquidation). When I got the chance to buy a Kohl’s liquidation truckload of “domestics”, I went for it. Domestics in liquidation lingo means household items such as bedding, towels, curtains, small furniture, small appliances and home decor.

How To Tell What Are Kohls Liquidation Items

Before you go to a Kohl’s liquidation store near you, you will want to know how to spot Kohls liquidation items. There are a few ways to tell if the items being sold are Kohl’s return items: either by their stickers, tags, and/or by their brand names.

Kohl’s Transfer Stickers

If you look closely at the sticker above, you’ll see that the Kohl’s logo is blackened out with a marker. The sticker says “Send to DC”. DC is an abbreviation for “direct contract”, but I like to think of it as “distribution center” as liquidation and salvage items from big name stores usually end up at a DC to be sold by brokers to resellers.

The sticker also says “Damaged; Large Imperfection” but I would take that with a grain of salt. A lot of people that return items like to say something is wrong with the item so they don’t have to pay return shipping. At our store, we left people open the items to inspect them if they are worried. Other stores may not allow self-opening, but you can ask an employee to open the package to look for any damages. And if it’s a case of a small tear, it may still be worth fixing yourself if you got a real deal on it.

Kohl’s Yellow Bin Tags

These tags which appear to be printed at the register say “yellow bin” which I can image is a big yellow bin in the back of the store to throw items into that need to go to the DC. They do say “send to DC” after all. The reasons vary from “Damaged” to “Web-Exclusive” which means it was bought online at Kohls.com and returned to a store. The store does not sell that item so it goes to liquidation (yay for us).

Kohl’s Private Brands

Most likely you will know if the liquidation items are from Kohl’s is if the items are one of Kohl’s private brand portfolio (also known as “signature brands”, “exclusive brands” or “owned brands”). Kohl’s private brands (and their category of items) include:
