I grew up in a small Christian community. I was baptized and confirmed at the United Church of Christ (UCC) but switched to be a Missouri synod Lutheran when I was young and married with children. I am still Lutheran today.
But my aunt is Catholic. She, too, grew up in the UCC church, but converted to Catholicism when she married. I’d heard her talk about “the saint that helps you find things”. And now that I’m desperately looking for a portable security camera that we misplaced, I decided maybe Saint Anthony could help me out.
Saint Anthony of Padua (1195–1231) was a Portuguese Catholic priest and Franciscan friar renowned for his powerful preaching, deep theological knowledge, and devotion to the poor. Often called the “Hammer of Heretics,” he was an influential teacher and is best known as the patron saint of lost items. His eloquence and miracles earned him sainthood less than a year after his death, and he remains one of the most beloved saints in the Catholic Church. His feast day is celebrated on June 13.
The rhyme that my aunt says when she needs help finding something is:
Saint Anthony, Saint Anthony, please come around. Something is lost and needs to be found.
The longer version prayer according to the Archdiocese is:
O blessed St. Anthony,
the grace of God has made you a powerful advocate
in all our needs and the patron
for the restoring of things lost or stolen.
I turn to you today with childlike love and deep confidence.
You have helped countless children of God
to find the things they have lost,
material things, and, more importantly,
the things of the spirit: faith, hope, and love.
I come to you with confidence;
help me in my present need.
I recommend what I have lost to your care,
in the hope that God will restore it to me,
if it is His holy Will.Amen.
Will this prayer work for a Christian non-Catholic? I’ll update the post if we find what we are searching for.
