According to the Sleep Foundation, mattresses must be replaced every 6 to 8 years. And with the average price range for a queen-size mattress being between $1,500 and $2,000, according to Sleepopolis, the mattress industry is big business! So, how can you get a piece of the mattress pie? Here are several ways that average people, like you and me, can make money with mattresses.

Flip Mattresses
Many online mattress companies offer free trial periods where the customer can “return” the mattress after testing it out for so many nights if they decide the new mattress isn’t for them. But it’s difficult to return a mattress, especially if it’s a “bed in a box” style which definitely is not going to fit back into the box it came in.
And since the mattress companies can’t resell a used mattress, they will actually pay someone to go pick up the lightly used “like new” mattresses. They may have a predetermined destination for the mattress, such as a charity to donate to. But sometimes the person that picks them up can do with them what they want such as keep or resell them!
So, what do you need to get started flipping mattresses? First of all, you’ll need a vehicle big enough to transport mattresses. Second, you must be able to lift 50-100 pounds (or have someone help you). And lastly, you need a source for mattress leads. Apply to be a Sharetown rep that provides return experiences for mattress companies such as Casper, Purple, Helix, Layla, Nest Bedding, and GhostBed. I personally applied and got accepted. Here is my personal Sharetown Rep Review.
Mattress Liquidation
General and mattress retailers are always looking to unload liquidation which includes last season’s models that didn’t sell, returned items, and even overstock items. You can buy liquidation mattresses by the pallet or the truckload from retailers such as Macy’s, JCPenney’s, and Bed Bath & Beyond. I’ve even received mattresses on Target pallets.
If you have a liquidation store, mattresses are always in great demand and are good sellers. I’ve even seen bin stores selling mattresses in addition to their bin items. But you don’t need a storefront to sell liquidation mattresses. You can simply sell them via online marketplaces such as Facebook or Craigslist.
To get started selling liquidation mattresses, you’ll need a place to store your mattresses, like a garage. You’ll need some starter money to buy a few mattresses. You should be able to buy mattresses at least 75% off the retail price and aim to sell at 50% off the retail price to double your money.
If you don’t have any money to invest in buying liquidation mattresses upfront, there are several reseller financing options available to borrow starter money.
Mattress Affiliate Programs
Companies offer affiliate programs because it’s a great way to increase their online presence and gain more customers. Affiliates receive commissions, usually ranging from 5% to 20%, depending on the company, whenever a referral uses their unique link and makes a purchase.
So, you can make money by referring customers to companies you trust and love! And those companies will pay you a percentage of the sale at no cost to you and no extra cost to the consumer. You can promote these links via social media and start a blog dedicated to sleep, mattresses, or home decor. Mattress Franchises
A mattress franchise or specialty shop is a good way to get into the mattress business without having to start from scratch. But there is usually an investment cost involved. The investment cost may include inventory, storefront setup, training, and support, as well as marketing tools and materials.
If you don’t want to commit to working long days running a retail store or paying the high rent of a retail store, consider Mattress By Appointment which is just as the name says, sell mattresses by appointment. Dealers can be their own boss, control their working hours around family commitments and take advantage of a reliable industry that remains strong even in times of recession.
Before committing to a mattress franchise (not to be confused with an MLM), do your research on the company and make sure you understand all the terms of the agreement. You’ll also need to have excellent customer service skills and be knowledgeable about the company’s products in order to give customers the best shopping experience possible.
Conclusion
Getting started in the mattress business isn’t as hard as you might think. With liquidation, affiliate programs and franchises, there are plenty of options for anyone interested in selling mattresses. Do your research and decide which option suits you best, then get started! Good luck!
